The UK's points-based immigration system sets out a series of new immigration rules aimed at creating a level playing field in the UK for workers from inside and outside the EU.

To qualify as a skilled worker, applicants must score a total of 70 points.
The 50 main points are awarded if you have a job offer at a specified skill level from a licensed sponsor, where the applicant must be able to provide evidence of their English language ability (usually at B1 or B2 level).

20 additional points can be obtained through a “point exchange” process, primarily based on the level of salary offered, but also covering roles recognised as professions in the absence of a licence and those jobs requiring an appropriate doctoral-level qualification.

The table below describes the scoring:

How long is the health and care worker's visa valid for?

Your visa can last for up to five years before you need to extend it. You will need to apply to extend or update your visa when it expires or if you change job or employer.

Can I obtain permanent residence through this visa?

You may apply to extend your visa as often as you like, provided you still meet the eligibility requirements.

After five years, you can apply to settle permanently in the UK. After one year from the grant of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you may be entitled to apply for citizenship in the United Kingdom.

  • To be financially dependent on you.

You will also need to show that you are able to support your partner and your children while you are in the UK. You will need to:

£315 per child.

£200 for each additional child.
