Home Office guidance on citizenship

A person applying for citizenship from 10 February 2025 who previously arrived without the required entry clearance or electronic travel authorisation, having made a dangerous journey, will normally be refused citizenship.

Home Office guidance on nationality: the section on the “good character requirement” was updated on Monday to make clear that citizenship applications involving illegal entry will normally be refused, regardless of when the illegal entry took place.

The guidance states: “Any person applying for citizenship from 10 February 2025 who has previously entered the UK illegally will normally be refused, regardless of the time that has passed since the illegal entry.”

As this guidance has met with objections, it is expected to be debated in Parliament, which will decide whether or not it is approved.
